How to Pitch Martin Bryant

How to Pitch Martin Bryant

1) What’s the best way to pitch you?

Always email - it means everything is in the same place and I can use tools like Dropbox's Mailbox and Google's Inbox to control the flow.

2) What’s the best time to pitch you?

There's no best time – I get through emails as quickly as I can at any time of week, month or year.

3) Other than your own, which is your favorite publication to read?

I enjoy reading the New York Times and the Guardian as they have good technology coverage but it's relaxing to also read about things that have got nothing to do with tech.

4) Who’s your favorite journalist?

I can't pick a single one – I enjoy the writing and scoops of whole list of journalists. My favorites have a unique personality to their writing. In no particular order: Kara Swisher, Robin Wauters, Alexia Tsotsis, Mat Honan and John Gruber are all enjoyable to read, for example.

5) What kind of stories interest you?

I like discovering a new company that really has hit on something new. That may be world-changing, or just a fun twist on an existing concept but there's nothing like being first to write about something that you know is going to be big.

6) What tips would you give someone pitching you?

Keep your initial email brief but informative. A wall of text can be hard to parse when you just want to know 'what is it and why will TNW readers care?' You should be able to answer that in a couple of short paragraphs.

7) What will you never write about?

I never say never, but we rarely write about a funding announcement unless there's an interesting broader story around it. Also, we rarely write about crowdfunding campaigns – there are so many, and too many are glorified pipedreams. A working prototype or a team with a proven track record can help peke our interest.

8) Star Wars or Star Trek?

Definitely Star Wars – I've never got into Star Trek, I just don't see the appeal.
