Picking the ideal PR firm for your green tech company

How to choose the perfect PR agency to tell your green tech company's story

Suffice it to say that climate change is on everyone’s mind. From Morocco’s recent devastating earthquake to the fires in Maui, it’s no wonder over half the population of the United States is polled to be worried about climate change. As anxieties increase and we are increasingly conscious of environmental concerns, green tech companies are at the forefront of innovation.

The world is experiencing a green tech revolution, with investments and innovations soaring in renewable energy, sustainable transportation, and eco-friendly materials. According to data from Statista, between 2022 and 2030, the global green technology and sustainability market is forecast only to grow bigger. In 2022, the size of this market amounted to roughly 13.76 billion U.S. dollars. By 2030, it is expected to peak at almost 62 billion U.S. dollars, increasing at a compound annual growth rate of 20.8% from 2023 to 2030.

All of these companies are dedicated to developing sustainable solutions that will help us mitigate environmental impact. As the industry continues to grow, effective public relations (PR) has become more crucial than ever in helping these companies communicate their innovations, values, and contributions to a broader audience.

Selecting the right tech PR agency isn't a light decision for any company, especially not one with so much at stake. Here’s what to consider when doing so:

What to consider when choosing a tech PR agency

PR is more than just a buzzword; it's a lifeline in this instance. Effective PR can elevate a green tech company's visibility, shape its public image, and create trust among stakeholders. Take, for example, Patagonia's "Don't Buy This Jacket" Campaign in 2011. Patagonia ran a bold campaign in The New York Times on Black Friday, encouraging people not to buy their products unless they really needed them. This campaign highlighted the brand's commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices, and it remains one of the most profound sustainable PR campaigns to date.

No matter the industry, green tech companies have unique challenges and stories to tell within that sector. In order to partner with an effective PR agency, it’s vital to choose one that understands the intricacies of that particular industry coupled with green tech, the collective jargon, so to speak. When a PR firm already has deep knowledge of green technology, they are better equipped to navigate the complexities in the narrative, identify relevant media outlets, and hopefully already have relationships in the field in order to conduct successful outreach with relevant reporters.

The right agency should be capable of grasping the technical intricacies of your green tech innovations and translating them into accessible, easy-to-read, and compelling stories for the media. Additionally, they should be adept at developing a tailored PR strategy for the solution the company is trying to solve. This strategy should ultimately align with the company's monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals, ensuring that all efforts are working together to achieve objectives.

On another note, past performance is also a reliable indicator of whether or not the partnership will be successful. Take a close look at an agency's portfolio and case studies and ask specific questions about their work in the green tech sector. A tech PR agency with a proven track record will have successfully generated both national and trade media coverage and helped to build brand recognition for their clients while enhancing their reputation.

Allocate the necessary resources

Establishing a realistic PR budget is one of our biggest pieces of advice for any client. The PR budget should be thoughtful and align with the expected outcomes and long-term benefits of a PR campaign. To match that, it should also ensure a long-term budget as successful PR does not happen overnight. While of course, we know it's essential to be cost-conscious, quality PR can - and does - yield substantial returns in terms of brand recognition, partnerships, and revenue.

More importantly, companies not allocating internal resources to support the tech PR agency's efforts is a total misfire. From the main point of contact for the PR firm to which teams are going to work in tangent, companies must ensure that they have a dedicated team available for consultations, interviews, content development, and collaboration. This is a team effort from the onset. Otherwise, initiatives will stall and lose momentum (i.e. emails will go unanswered, Slack channels dormant, and interview opportunities will fall by the wayside). An engaged and responsive internal team will significantly enhance the effectiveness of your PR campaigns.

Make the selection process mission-critical

A detailed Request for Proposals (RFP) is a great place to start in a search for PR. This document should provide potential PR agencies with comprehensive information about the company, its goals, and the specific expectations from the PR campaign. Ask agencies to provide proposals that outline their strategies, pricing structures, and evidence of past successes.

Conduct interviews with prospective PR agencies to gain a better understanding of their capabilities, communication style, and alignment with the company's values to see if it’s a good fit. Additionally, perform reference checks to verify the agency's credibility. Reviews on platforms like G2, Google, and Clutch can provide valuable insights into the experiences of other clients.

Once the choice has been made, work with the agency to establish a clear onboarding process. This process should ensure a smooth transition and kickstart PR initiatives effectively.

Selecting the right PR agency for a green tech company is a critical step toward achieving success for an organization's mission. By prioritizing factors such as expertise in green tech, a proven track record, effective communication, and careful allocation of resources, one can set their green tech company on the path to thriving in a world that increasingly values sustainability and environmental responsibility. With the right PR partner at the helm, green tech companies can reach the audiences that matter most and contribute to a greener, less anxiety-producing, and sustainable future.
